Born on 27 July 1946 in Liverpool, he attended the Slade School of Fine Art, where he initially trained as a painter. His artistic sensibilities, however, found their ultimate expression in poetry. Reading’s verse is distinguished by its formal precision, dark humour, and incisive critique of environmental destruction, social inequality, and human suffering. Often described as a "poet of witness," his work does not shy away from uncomfortable truths, delivering them with a keen eye for detail and a masterful command of form and language. Over a career spanning four decades, Reading published more than 20 volumes of poetry, including Work in Regress (1978) , C (1984) , and Vendange Tardive (1996). His unique voice and innovative style earned him numerous accolades, including the Cholmondeley Award and the Whitbread Poetry Award for Collected Poems, Volume 1 in 2004. Despite his success, Reading eschewed the literary spotlight, famously working as a weighbridge operator for many years to support his writing. He passed away on 17 November 2011, leaving behind a body of work that continues to challenge and provoke. Peter Reading’s Diplopic is a masterful meditation on duality, fragmentation, and the dissonance of modern existence. The title, derived from the medical term for double vision, aptly reflects the collection’s thematic exploration of contrasting perspectives—whether between the personal and political, the human and environmental, or life and death. Published in 1983, Diplopic is characteristic of Reading’s style: sharp, sardonic, and formally innovative. The poems juxtapose the mundane with the catastrophic, often revealing a world in decline. His imagery is vivid and unrelenting, capturing both the stark beauty of the natural world and the damage inflicted upon it by humanity. A striking feature of this collection is Reading’s experimental use of form. He employs fragmented syntax, typographical play, and unconventional structures to mirror the fractured reality he depicts. Yet, despite its intellectual rigour, Diplopic remains deeply emotive, resonating with the reader through its honesty and urgency. At its core, the collection critiques human greed and environmental degradation, themes that remain remarkably prescient. It is a harrowing but essential read, one that exemplifies Reading’s unique ability to bear witness to the darker sides of contemporary life while maintaining a fiercely original poetic voice. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 57 pages.
